– (UPDATED) Philippine Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr stresses the Philippines’ ‘pragmatic approach’ toward the West Philippine Sea disputeMANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – While hosting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit this year, the Philippines rejected the prospect of raising Manila’s legal victory against Beijing during the regional meeting.”We are not going to raise this issue…because there is really no useful benefit,” Philippine Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr said in a news conference on Wednesday, January 11.Yasay was referring to the ruling by an arbitral tribunal at the Permanent Court of Arbitration against China’s expansive claim over the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

– MANILA – The Philippines will not raise its legal victory in a sea dispute with China when it hosts a Southeast Asian leaders’ summit this year, Manila’s top diplomat said Wednesday.The ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which said China had no historic rights to the resource-rich South China Sea, will be raised with Beijing “at some future time,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay said.”We are not going to raise this issue, or rather this matter or this decision of the arbitral tribunal because there is really no useful benefit,” Yasay said in a news briefing.

– The Philippines’ top diplomat says his country won’t raise its recent international arbitration victory against China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea during Asian summit talks that Manila will host this year.Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. said Wednesday that pressing last year’s arbitration ruling during the annual meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations “is just simply counter-productive for our purposes.”Yasay said the Philippines intends to raise the ruling, which invalidated China’s historic claims under a UN treaty, in bilateral talks with Beijing in the future.
