YouTube’s head of music confirmed that the company is planning on merging its Google Play Music service with YouTube Red to create a new streaming offering.
“The important thing is combining YouTube Red and Google Play Music, and having one offering,” Cohen said when asked about why YouTube Red isn’t more popular with music users.
Then there’s YouTube Music, which anyone can use but it gets better if you’re signed up for YouTube Red.
There’s YouTube Red, which removes ads from videos and lets you save them offline, while also giving you access to Google Play Music for free.
In some ways, merging the services won’t be a major change — paying for a subscription to either YouTube Red or Google Play Music gives you the other service for free.

However, should YouTube Red, YouTube, YouTube Music, and Google Play Music be brought together more cohesively under one umbrella, more potential subscribers may be enticed towards a new service.
The music service is already streamed through Google Play Music and YouTube Music, and while ad-free videos are accessed through YouTube, you can also watch YouTube Red Original television shows and films as a paid subscriber.
File PhotoGoogle has revealed plans to merge YouTube Red and Google Play Music to create a new, streamlined service.
Back in February, Google confirmed that the YouTube Music and Google Play Music teams were being combined, which started off rumors that the tech giant may be looking at streamlining how they offer music subscriptions.

Still, existing subscribers to YouTube Red or Google Play Music shouldn’t see a hugely significant change, as the two services are essentially already combined.
Currently the company offers YouTube Red , which removes ads and lets users save videos for offline viewing, in addition to an ad-supported YouTube Music app (with additional benefits for Red subscribers), while YouTube TV is provided as a separate subscription service.Google said it would notify users of the changes beforehand, but the timeframe for the rebranding remains unclear.
He didn’t address whether or not the two apps would merge — but it seems very unlikely.
Google Play Music and the ad-free YouTube Red service are set to merge in a new streaming package, according to YouTube’s head of music (via The Verge ).Lyor Cohen revealed the coming change during a panel session at the New Music Seminar conference in New York on Wednesday, saying the two services needed to be combined to educate consumers and attract new subscribers.By consolidating the offerings into a unified package, Google hopes the benefits of its subscriptions will be clearer to customers.
